Demolition of the First Baptist Church
Demolition of the First Baptist Church
in the early to mid 1950's the prevailing mindset in the City of Gainesville was to do away with all vestiges of old-world architecture. Though built by experienced craftsmen to withstand the ages, buildings like this one were demolished en masse in favor of the 1950's modern contemporary styles (whose architectural fad status quickly became sorely dated) The ornate Alachua County Courthouse, and the exquisite 1890 First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville also fell prey to this movement.
